In its investigation of ACORN, the California Attorney General discovered some shocking things about the "pimp tapes" used to discredit and, ultimately, bring down the organization. They were so heavily edited that they hid the truth about what actually happened in wingnut filmmaker James O'Keefe's many encounters with the community outreach organization. In fact, they often showed the exact opposite of what really occurred.
The most infamous example is the ACORN worker who supposedly offered to help O'Keefe traffic underage girls from Mexico. The tapes appear to show the man agreeing to help and to use his "contacts" in Mexico. What is left out of the story is that the very same ACORN employee was asking so many questions because he was gathering information for the police! The man's brother is a detective who investigates child trafficking, so he attempted to gather as much information as possible so the police could bust the child traffickers - not help them. Naturally, O'Keefe, Fox News, Andrew Breitbart and the entire right wing blogosphere left that out. The man ultimately lost his job for doing the right thing and reporting potential child abuse, while the right celebrated O'Keefe and Breitbart for their deception.
There are numerous examples of dishonest editing and leaving out relevant portions of conversations that make them appear to mean something else. In this clip from Rachel Maddow's show last night, she proves it. And if you trafficked in this story, railed on and on about the evil ACORN, then you, too, owe them a huge apology. What happened to ACORN is sickening, and it is based on lies. Shame on Fox, O'Keefe, Breitbart, and the 32 members of Congress who sought to celebrate O'Keefe in the House. Sickening.
