This is probably old news for many of you, but damn, The Wire is an excellent show! Not sure how I missed it before. I'm a big fan of cop shows in general (NYPD Blue still ranks among my favorites of all time) and this one is very realistic. It's set in Baltimore where I was born. I left at age 3, and if this show's depiction of Baltimore is accurate, it's a good thing I left.
The real unique thing about The Wire is that the stories are told from two different perspectives: the cops and the criminals. Most shows only show the police perspective. It also shows how much city politics can effect police work, which is an under reported aspect.
I burned through Season One already and have bumped Season Two to the top of my Netflix queue. Can't wait.
