I have been listening to the new album from M.I.A., Arular, a lot lately. This is not my usual type of music, but despite that, I can't stop listening to it. M.I.A. is a Sri Lankan woman (who lives in England now) named Maya Arulpragasam who mixes hip-hop, raggae, dance music, and internationally-flavored rhythms to make a pretty unique sound. Her bio says her family fled Sri Lanka when she was young because her father is some kind of wanted rebel there. Who knows. Her songs flirt with politics and use some leftwing sloganeering, but I would not really consider this political music. It's just fun stuff; and with her strong accent it's difficult to understand what she's saying anyhow. Listen to "Bingo" by M.I.A. here.
