- House of Representatives sends a defeat to the White House. The House, in a completely unexpected move, passed an amendment sponsored by Bernie Sanders (I-VT) that would curtail some of the power granted to the FBI in the name of "terrorism" investigations. The new Patriot Act "2" would have allowed the FBI to investigate citizens' library records and book store purchases on "suspicion" of terrorist activities. No judge's order was required. This vague law was properly voted against, and it's nice to see some conservatives finally coming to their senses. Of course, the usual GOP toadies like Tom DeLay (R-TX) and J.D. Hayworth (R-AZ) are criticizing those who oppose the President's new law as aiding terrorists. Shut up, scumbags.
- Bright Eyes and Pixies to headline Newport Folk Fest. Pixies will be doing an acoustic set, and Bright Eyes wil likely be performing with M. Ward. Also on the bill are Elvis Costello, My Morning Jacket, and a number of "jam bands." Dunkin Donuts is sponsoring the three-day festival in Newport, Rhode Island.
